Fire at Barton Tissue Plant

Multiple fire departments from northwest Alabama have responded to a fire at the Essity plant in Barton.  Authorities report the fire is contained to one building that is used to store rolls of paper.

Completed in 2004, the 1.2 million square foot plant manufactures paper towels, napkins, and tissue for commercial markets under the Tork brand name.  There is no word yet on how the fire will affect operations.

The fire is under control at this time and no injuries have been reported.

Update as of 8:30 am Sunday:  The fire continues to burn at the plant, with various departments from Colbert, Lauderdale, and Franklin counties working in shifts to keep the fire under control.
